To confetti or not to confetti on your wedding day? And how?

I’ll start this blog post off with a resounding and overly biased statement - DEFINITELY HAVE CONFETTI.

The confetti shot is hands down one of my top 5 favourite images on a wedding day, but I have had times when the couple has decided it’s not for them. Which I totally respect, but if I were to offer some advice when you are planning your wedding day - definitely incorporate the confetti shot. It’s an excuse for your friends and family to rain down petals on you (or whatever confetti you choose to have, we will get on to that later) as you take your first steps as a happily married couple.

Where should we have confetti, and when?

It really depends on where you are getting married, the venues rules, and how much you love confetti!

As I previously mentioned, as a photographer, I am biased towards confetti - it does wonders for your wedding photos. Picture a simple scene - a group of people stood in a room relatively happy, chatting away - sure it looks nice on photos. Now factor in a confetti canon and confetti raining down on everyone, I gaurantee you the mixture of suprise and delight on peoples faces, along with the added depth confetti gives to a photo - you’ll be on to a winner.

So you have a few options for the post ceremony locations..

  1. If you are at a venue where they are happy for your guests to throw confetti inside the church/ceremony room then you can have confetti straight after you finish signing your wedding register, it’s a nice way to celebrate and feels nice as its a natural flow as you walk out as man and wife/man and man/wife and wife/etc.

  2. The more likely option, is that you will need to have your confetti shot outside, and to be honest - it’s my favourite. It gives your wedding photographer time to get people in position correctly, give them directions (throw the confetti upwards and not in their eyes please!) and there is also plenty of space and natural light to work with.

What about the dance floor?

Again - it’s a YES from me. As long as you are careful with what confetti you use (being mindful that it can be slippery, especially with spilled drinks combined) - confetti on the dancefloor is a winner. I remember a recent wedding where they had balloons full of confetti that they popped it added so much. I then collected handfuls of the confetti and had my second shooter go above the couple for their first dance and rain it down on them (with their consent of course!) It added a bit extra to the photo and everyone had a bit more fun in the confetti shower.

What confetti to use?

This really comes down to personal choice. The main thing I would say is that you get confetti that matches the colour scheme of your wedding. I’m a big lover of neutral/pastel coloured petals, but it’s your day so go as whacky as you like! It will all work.. have your guests throwing malteasers if you like! I’d recommend getting biodegradable wedding confetti if you can - it’s easy to get and why not!
